Light Mounts
Rack Lighting Bar
The idea behind this was to place all my lighting units as
close to the GoPro HD camera as possible, so I thought a
lighting bar mounted on the forward edge of the front rack
would be ideal. It consists of a short length of dowel about
350 mm long x 30 mm diameter. It fixes to the rack with a
couple of long bolts with wing nuts, for easy attachment and
removal. A thin timber bar serves as a "washer" for the
bolts. You could also use large circular metal washer or
short lengths of flat metal bar. Picture can be seen
opposite.
Rack Side Light Mounts
My original version of these mounts were made from a broom
handle off-cut, some inner tube packing and duct tape, but
were far from pleasing to look at. So, I thought I'd make
something more professional looking. The body is made from a
35 mm length of 32 mm diameter x 1 mm wall thickness
aluminium tubing with a 30 mm plastic tube cap fitted to
each end, all cheaply bought on eBay. Drill through for a 60
mm long M6 bolt. Use a butterfly/wing nut for easy on and
off. A 35 mm diameter washer helps prevent the light clamp
from slipping off. You'll need a large rubber washer (not
shown, made from old bicycle inner tube) between inside tube
cap and the rack itself to prevent the mount twisting when
the light is attached. Simples! Picture can be seen
opposite.
Seat Stem Rear Light Mount
The Rack Side Mounts mentioned above are ideal for mounting
front lights on the front rack and rear lights on the rear
rack but are not suitable when panniers are fitted or indeed
such times as when racks are not installed on the bike. I
got round this my purchasing a cheap Kore B1B
Stem and fitted it onto the seat stem - a thin shim made
from a plastic 35 mm film pot was required. I then used a
short length of 32 mm diameter tubing as used in the Rack
Side Mounts above, fitted with the end caps. This was
inserted where the handlebar would have been. Lights were
then mounted on the tube. A simple, solid and effective
solution. Pictures can be seen opposite. |
